Elizabeth Michelman
My art has always been combined with language, which I explore through sculpture, installation, writing, and video. Recently, moving away from a preoccupation with my own words and ideas, I have begun to design community projects where I provide a formal gesture or structure and ask my audience to provide individualized content.
The contribution of the artist is to create a form that tolerates, without attempting to resolve, conflict, ambiguity and uncertainty. Often it is the ability to contemplate complexity or dissonance without insisting on immediate action that allows people to perceive new possibilities and to grow.
